Urgent care centers –
A better alternative to emergency rooms
CIGNA encourages the use of urgent care centers as a cost-effective and time-saving alternative to the emergency room when your employees’ primary care physicians are unavailable. Urgent care centers are staffed by physicians, offer shorter wait times and charge considerably less than a hospital emergency room. With CIGNA plans, the urgent care copay is typically less than half the cost of an emergency room copay.

Typical costs for an emergency room visit can range from $650 to $850, while urgent care centers typically charge far less.3 For example,
$79 Clinical visit
$129 Clinical visit with one procedure, such as burn treatment
$189 Clinical visit with multiple procedures, such as laceration treatment with sutures

Currently, CIGNA works with almost 2,700 urgent care centers nationwide, and we’re always adding new facilities.
